Finding purpose in your 20s

Who else is 23,24,25 years old still trying to figure out their purpose in life? Or undecided on the career path to go down? It seems like in today’s day and age being 20 something and traveling, going to college and just living it how you want to is normal and accepted. Remember as kids how we thought being 20 something was old and ancient and now that we’re in our 20s, we’re wondering where time went. Wondering what happens now and how to get to where we want to go.

It seems like it’s expected by the time you’re in your 20s your supposed have it all together, graduated from college, get a job and settle down. But, that’s not the case will of us some are married and have kids and others are out until the sun comes up partying and spending time exploring the world. 50 + years ago, our grandparents were our age and younger getting out of high school and getting married, having kids and working. My grandparents were 18 and 21 when they got married and settled down, but it was common back then for that to happen. After high school life happens, by that I mean you become more independent and you start adulting- paying your own bills, keeping up with your car and investing more time into your health and well being.

Ive realized that you can’t please everyone, with the jobs I’ve had I’d try my best with the work and show the managers how well my work ethic is but sometimes they wouldn’t like me or just not care about me doing my job. People will always have different views and opinions on everything so you can’t help who you can’t please. There will be people who will rain on your parade and just flat out hate you why? Because haters have nothing else better to do but watch your every move and hope that you fall. The best way to combat haters is by showing them your happiness and they can’t affect you.

Compared to when I was 16/17 to now at 24 my days can be hectic sometimes, before I was pregnant I’d get up go to work then dance and home. Now, my days revolve around my daughter and even with going out for a few hours I’m drained by the time I’m back home. Establishing a day/night routine will help you unwind and schedule your time better. Setting goals for yourself whether it’s short term or long term help put things into perspective. You’ll have something to always look forward to.

It’s important to remember that you won’t have life figured out at 20 or 28 years old. I think that’s the beauty of life itself is finding your purpose at any age. It’s ok if you still live at home ( I do and it’s not a problem ) being that you’d need a high paying job to afford rent here, living at home longer does have benefits. It’s ok do things backwards, earlier and later there isn’t a set time to experience life. You live in the now so being 20 something is about finding yourself, love, friends, traveling the world and figuring out what you want in life. Do you want to today because you don’t know if you’ll get that chance again.

  1. I’m almost 19 years old and my mum already expects me to have my life together and everything figured out. Thankfuly, back to the time when I went to therapy, I got told by my therapist that it’s okay to not have everything figured out and it’s okay to make huge life changes even after 30. 🙂

That’s true, you don’t need to have everything figured out at 18, I’m 24 and don’t know what I’ll be doing in a year from now . I hope to be a more successful blogger that’s what I’m working towards . You can make big life decisions at any age it doesn’t have to be now, you’re young , you need to enjoy life

Being in my 20s has been a challenge! I’m in college and everyone keeps asking, “when are you graduating?” and most of the times, I just respond with, “I’m sure you’ll find out someday”. It’s frustrating being asked that all the time, everyone (including people you’re not close to) seems to have this untold expectation of you and I’ve come to realize that at the end of the day, you’re the only person who can disappoint you more than anyone and you’re the only person who will celebrate your achievements more than anyone. Great post. Loved this.

Thank you ! I agree it’s a challenge . I’ve been asked when am I going to get a full time job, have another kid I mean I don’t know . It’s expected that I’m settled and sufficient but it’s not the case right how.

It gets discouraging when that happens. You just need to remind yourself that you’re in a different path than others and you’re doing what’s best for you and your kid!

Good post, and thanks for the memories! lol! Now that I’m in my 30s, I realize the expectations placed on us in our 20s are extremely high. Spend 20s figuring out life, living and learning. Don’t rush into anything and take advantage of everything! Trust me, it’ll be worth it! 🙂

I am completely with you on this! Sometimes I have to remind myself that my life is still coming together at 24 years old. In some ways, I feel like I should have already “made it” with a well-paying job–the fact is that struggling is uncomfortable, but natural. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, you’re definitely not alone!

Agree with all of this. I think a big part of me holding myself back is that I keep falling into the “should” trap instead of looking at where I am now, and working toward bettering that. Opportunities will present themselves as long as you remain intentional in the work you are doing as well. I don’t mean this to say that we should passively just wait for things to fall into our laps, because life doesn’t work that way. I do think that, again, if you are doing your thing, and really just trying out new things and putting your best effort into it, you will align with opportunities that fit your desires. Great post 🙂

As someone who just turned 30 in June I can honestly say I struggled hard with not finding my purpose in my 20s. I dropped out of college, left what I thought was going to be my career and lived in a 1 bedroom apartment. I am still struggling, but I am in a better place now than I was even 6 months ago. I may not have found my purpose in life yet, but I am getting there!

My young age life is very different like the woman at this time when they really spend more their happy time on 20s, i finished my school at 17/18 and at the same age i had my 1st job while i’m finish my study in univ, not many thing i could have during those time while my other friend focus just only in their univ life and me need to focus with other else, and i could say i finish my 20s life when i’m 23 or in precisely when i got married and have a baby so my 20s seems finish. But i never regret those time as with that i found my purpose life very soon 😀

Either way it’s totally ok to take your time and just enjoy being you even if you’re still trying to figure it out. There’s no manual for this life because it’s yours. Unfortunately there is so much pressure on having your sh*t together all the time. I think Social Media also does not help- even IG is only ever showing ‘perfect’. We’ve come to compare ourselves all the time which puts a lot of pressure on ppl, young or already in their 30’s. I think a product of this is increasing Mental health awareness.
